In this new article we want to answer the most frequently asked questions about cross-flow filtration in the wine sector!

What is the clarity level that can be achieved?

The membranes used by Bared allow to obtain a brilliant wine. The clarity of the wine is evaluated by measuring the turbidity which is expressed by the NTU unit.

What is obtained from cross-flow filtration is lower than 1 NTU.

This level is obtained in a single step, starting with cloudy wines and regardless of how the wine was prepared before filtration.

The membranes have a pore size that can damage my high quality wines?

The membrane polymer selected by Bared does not modify the characteristics of the wine in any way nor does it reduce the qualitative value of the product. Unlike other materials there is no interaction with the polyphenols and polysaccharides of wines and there are no differences in filtration yield between white and red wines.

This technology maintains the aromas and avoid microbiological and olfactory contamination so much so that it is increasingly used even among producers of biological/organic wines.

How much water do I need to clean the crossflow filters?

Water consumption is very low, about 100-125 liters per filter module. Compared to ceramic membranes, for the same surface, consumption is lower by more than half per cleaning cycle. Compared to traditional DE filters, many users report water consumption reduced to 1/3 after a couple of years of use.

I need hot water to clean the crossflow filters?

No, fresh municipal water is enough for rinsing and cleaning Bared filters. Softened water is not necessary and there is no constraint regarding hardness.

I have a small cellar … is it convenient to purchase a crossflow filter?

Crossflow filtration can be used in cellars of any size. The versatility of these systems and the total recovery of the product make them efficient and convenient even with small quantities to be treated. Bared systems are extremely compact, easy to use and require no experience.

Can I filter the wine treated with bentonite?

With the Bared crossflow filter it is possible to filter new raw wines (and therefore turbid), centrifuged wines, also musts as long as they are well enzymed and settled, wines before and/or after tartaric stabilization, sparkling wines before and/or after the second fermentation, difficult wines (passito, aged sur lee, very red, pressed); all products treated with any clarifier (PVPP, bentonites, coal, etc.), after settling and racking off.

Can I bottle immediately after having filtered?

Yes, it is possible to bottle immediately after cross-flow filtration. For total safety in terms of sterility, a pre-bottling final cartridge is always recommended. However, the life of these cartridges is considerably extended thanks to the cross-flow filtration.

Can I filter decanting bottoms loaded with substances such as tartar crystals or activated carbon or products used for clarification?

Yes, the crossflow filter for lees is designed to cope with clogging, mechanical stress and resist abrasion. Can be achieved a final concentrate with solids content greater than 75% v/v.
